As a displaced Texan, or whatever I am, I’ve found it difficult to find a good red salsa. Specifically, I’m looking for a shelf-stable bottled variety that I can order regularly with consistent results. Here are the categories I’m looking for:
- Flavor: well-rounded taste, and not just spice.
- Chunkiness: I don’t want a thin ketchup.
- Heat: something with a good burn level.
I will update this page as I review options.
Mrs. Renfro’s Ghost Pepper Salsa

I found this to be okay in flavor, but overwhelmed by the spice level. It did not posses a slow burn, but rather instant heat. It also wasn’t very chunky.
- Flavor: 3/5
- Chunkiness: 2/5
- Heat*: 2/5
Synopsis: This would make a good ingredient to up flavor and spice content, like in a chili, but it lacks nuance and tolerable heat levels to be enjoyed as an individual dip.
*This indicates appropriateness of heat to the flavor profile, not how spicy it is.
